Sugary beverages, sodas, and naturally sweet fruit juices are BAD News!

Sugar Sweetened Beverages (SSBs) including fruit juices is associated with increased all-cause mortality for older adults according to a recent study.

This is not new news, but it is bad news for those who consume SSBs including naturally sweet fruit juices. Those who fall in the highest 20% of SSB consumption are twice as likely to die of cardiovascular disease compared to those in the lowest 20% of SSB consumers. This most recent study isolated fruit juice consumption alone and demonstrated elevated risk who drink this type of naturally sweet beverage. Humans were made to eat the occasional orange or apple not a cup full of them. An 8 ounce cup of apple juice has about 3-4 apples and 0 fiber.

Sugary beverage consumption is associated with an increased risk of obesity and higher BMI. However, independent of fat SSBs individually attribute to increased risk of type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, and Coronary Heart Disease mortality.
